  26. the word "tough" was used as a generic term of approval.  Which led to
  27. a few misunderstandings, among them a teenage guest at my house loudly
  28. announcing to my mother, "These are tough eggs, Mrs. Wright!"  It was
  29. meant as a compliment, of course.
